From today, June 3th, applications are open
to participate in the selection for admission to the doctoral school Gran Sasso
Science Institute (GSSI). Announcements of the competitive examinations for the
four curricula of study, physics, mathematics, computer science and social
sciences, have been published and can be viewed at www.gssi.infn.it.
“The international PhD school GSSI - said the Director
Eugenio Coccia - wants to give new life to a region that, even in difficulties
for the consequences of a violent earthquake, it is historically fertile from
the cultural point of view. Together with the University and the INFN Gran
Sasso Laboratories, the GSSI can help to make L’Aquila an attractive city for
top level research and higher education.” “The GSSI will be an institute where
students and teachers will be selected internationally. Attracting young
talent, we want to foster a climate culturally vibrant and bring a major contribution
to the socio-economic renaissance of L’Aquila and of its territory. On the
other hand research and higher education are always drivers of economic
growth”, concluded the Director.
The GSSI
It is an international PhD school and a center for research
and higher education. The Gran Sasso Science Institute aims to create a new center
of scientific excellence, attracting high-level resources in the fields of
natural and social sciences.
The PhD program will start in the academic year
2013-2014. It is organized into four PhD courses: astroparticle physics,
mathematics in natural, social and life sciences, computer science and urban
studies.
Learning and research at the GSSI are grounded on firm
epistemological and methodological bases. Aware of the complexity of today’s
world, no barriers stand between the GSSI areas. Cross-fertilization is a
feature that we want to be present in our activities of study and research.
Professors, researchers and students from all
scientific areas are selected internationally, following the standards of the
best graduate schools worldwide.
The PhD degree will be released with prestigious
educational institution: the School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste
(physics and mathematics), the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa (social
sciences) and the Institutions Markets Technologies (IMT) of Lucca (computer
science).
The GSSI is a project supported by the Organization
for Cooperation and Economic Development (OECD) and activated by the Italian
National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) as center for advanced studies.
It is funded by the Italian Government and by the Abruzzo Region.
Study at GSSI
The Gran Sasso Science Institute is located in an airy
and bright building along a tree-lined street in L’Aquila city center. The
structure features offices, classrooms, an auditorium that will host events and
conferences, a library and reading room, and common areas to socialize, talk
and spend time together.
We want our students get the best possible experience
during their time at the Gran Sasso Science Institute. That's why we provide
them free housing and meals plus the standard three years PhD grant. Recreational
and cultural services will be offered. So, whatever the students want from their
graduate experience, we offer the perfect environment in which they can learn,
develop their skills and have a great time.
